A pioneer in Dutch clubhouse work

The Institute for Mature Youth was founded in Rotterdam in 1920. W.E. van Wijk became its director in 1921. On March 21, 1922, the first clubhouse, De Arend, opened at Schiekade 98a.

It focused on working boys who had passed compulsory schooling age. They could attend classes, do carpentry, play sports, make music, perform theater, play chess and checkers, or use the reading room.

Interest was high. Over 2,100 young people visited the clubhouse in its first two years. Historical research describes De Arend as an early and important example of organized clubhouse work for working-class youth in the Netherlands.

Archive materials mainly tell the organization's story. Family-held items can show how members and staff personally experienced De Arend.
